Tyler Hogge: Whiplash and Extreme Greatness. I recently watched the movie ‘Whiplash’ after reading that Kobe Bryant called it one if his favorites and Kyrie Irving wrote the movie title on his game shoes. It’s an incredible movie about an aspiring drummer. (more)

Edward Charles Francis Publius de Bono (19 May 1933 – 9 June 2021)[1] was a Maltese physician and commentator. He originated the term lateral thinking, and wrote many books on thinking, including Six Thinking Hats... The originator of the term 'Lateral Thinking', de Bono wrote 85 books with translations into 46 languages.... Convinced that a key way forward for humanity is a better language, he published The Edward de Bono Code Book in 2000. In this book, he proposed a suite of new words based on numbers, where each number combination represents a useful idea or situation that currently does not have a single-word representation. For example, de Bono code 6/2 means "Give me my point of view and I will give you your point of view." Such a code might be used in situations where one or both of the two parties in a dispute are making insufficient effort to understand the other's perspective. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_de_Bono

(The book) Six Thinking Hats was written by Dr. Edward de Bono. "Six Thinking Hats" and the associated idea of parallel thinking provide a means for groups to plan thinking processes in a detailed and cohesive way, and in doing so to think together more effectively. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Thinking_Hats (more)

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky saysfounder mode’ came from studying Steve Jobs. One of the reasons I love talking to Brian is because he spends so much time specifically obsessing over company structure and decision-making — if you listened to his previous Decoder episodes, you already had a preview of founder mode because Brian radically restructured the company after the covid-19 pandemic to get away from its previous divisional structure and transition into a more functional structure that works from a single roadmap. Airbnb Wants to Feel Young Again. Booking Holdings and Airbnb have long resembled a father-son duo of the online travel industry. Airbnb has traditionally been the cool kid of the two... But, just as people often look (and behave) more like their parents as they age, Airbnb is increasingly starting to look more like Booking. The two companies are expected to grow revenue at roughly the same rates next year—about 11%... That’s the competitive backdrop for Airbnb’s significant executive shake-up today, an “inflection point” for the company, CEO Brian Chesky wrote. ((2023-11-14) Brian Chesky's New Playbook) (more)

Paul Graham on Founder Mode. At a YC event last week Brian Chesky gave a talk that everyone who was there will remember... The theme of Brian's talk was that the conventional wisdom about how to run larger companies is mistaken. As Airbnb grew, well-meaning people advised him that he had to run the company in a certain way for it to scale. Their advice could be optimistically summarized as "hire good people and give them room to do their jobs." He followed this advice and the results were disastrous. (more)

Melissa Perri: My thoughts on "Founder Mode" and why it's dangerous. I had dinner with a few Product Leaders in Berlin the other night that turned into a discussion on how they can work better with founder CEOs. This has always been a tense subject, and I’ve seen a lot of friction firsthand between these two groups. Now, I’m worried this article is going to make it worse. (more)

John Cutler: Sociotechnical Maestros with Gene Kim. I recently finished reading Gene's latest book Wiring the Winning Organization which he co-wrote with Steven Spear. The themes of slowification, simplification, and amplification have already started to seep into my day-to-day conversations. The book is filled with case studys, but also creative metaphors like Gene and Steven moving a couch, which is where our chat starts. (more)

John Cutler: Octopus Careers & Throwaway Stickies with Chris Butler. Chris embraces the mess like few people I’ve met. Defying categorization in his career path, inventing models and techniques for collaboration and sense-making, he’s well versed in engineering, design and product, and figuring out how to challenge the status quo in big companies. Pranav Dhoolia on Adding ChatGPT-Like functionality to MacOS Spotlight Search. In one of my YouTube videos, I locally hosted LLMs using Ollama, and interacted with them in a ChatGPT like interface using Ollama Web UI also hosted locally. This continues that journey. Here, I build a solution using a locally hosted LLM and LangChain (the most popular framework for building LLM solutions). (more)

Simon Willison on Imitation Intelligence, my keynote for PyCon US 2024. I gave an invited keynote at PyCon US 2024 in Pittsburgh this year. My goal was to say some interesting things about AI—specifically about Large Language Models—both to help catch people up who may not have been paying close attention, but also to give people who were paying close attention some new things to think about.
